New Auburn teachers learn key lesson from schools tour: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist Starting a career as a teacher can be a daunting task so to help prepare the new hires, the Auburn Enlarged City School District hosts a two-day orientation event at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building.  While the event on Aug. 21 and 22 featured presentations on what they need to know to be able to do their jobs, the new teachers also learned an important lesson outside of a classroom – what makes the Auburn district special. Elementary Summer School program successful: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist Seward Elementary School Principal and Summer School Principal Melissa O’Donnell was thrilled with how the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s 2023 elementary summer school program turned out. “It was a fantastic and successful program,” she said. “We had representation from all of the elementary schools with a pretty equal number of teachers from each of our elementary schools.” The district started its elementary summer school program two years ago as a way to provide extra assistance to students who may have gaps in their learning because of COVID-19. Auburn School Board to Hold Public Hearing on Strengthening School Cell Phone Policy: The Auburn Enlarged City School Board will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the district's electronic device policy on Tuesday, July 25 at 5:00 p.m. at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building. “Members of the school board have been increasingly concerned with the impact that cell phone use in school has had on students' mental health and ability to learn. We're looking for public input on how to best address these issues heading into the next school year.” said Ian Phillips, Auburn's School Board President. Proposed Federal Grant Amendment:   The district was awarded a $9.5 million grant under the American Rescue Plan Act, in response to the Covid Pandemic.  The district will be submitting an amendment in July.  Please see the graphic below for details of the proposed amendment. Registration event June 12 at BTW for FREE before and after school programming in the 2023-2024 school year: June 6, 2023   The Auburn Enlarged City School District and the Booker T. Washington Community Center are partnering to offer FREE before and after school programming for Auburn students in the 2023-2024 school year.   Before school programs start at 6:30 a.m. and will be on site at Casey Park Elementary, Genesee Elementary, Herman Ave Elementary, and Seward Elementary.   After school programs run until 6:00 p.m. and will be on site at Booker T. Washington Community Center, Casey Park Elementary, Genesee Elementary, Herman Ave Elementary, Seward Elementary, Auburn Junior High, and Auburn High School.   Booker T. ARISE Adaptive Design visits Seward, donates adaptive devices: May 31, 2023   In May, friends from ARISE Adaptive Design visited Seward Elementary to donate some adaptive furniture they built, which will be used in Seward’s 12:1 classrooms.   Connor McGough, ARISE Adaptive Design Coordinator, and his assistant spoke to the speech therapists, school psychologists, social workers, and guidance counselors at Seward about all of the things ARISE can provide for our students when needed. Their team uses everyday materials to create customized equipment and devices for children and adults with disabilities. Mr. McGough said they try to create items that are not available on the market yet, or if they are, at a much lower price point.   We are very excited to put these donated pieces to good use in Seward’s 12:1 classrooms. ... more >>

Herman Ave kindergarten class takes virtual field trip to The Commons on St. Anthony: May 19, 2023   In honor of May being Older Americans Month, Mrs. Gremli’s kindergarten class at Herman Ave Elementary took a virtual field trip to The Commons on St. Anthony.   Since COVID, the Commons has been unable to have students or youth groups in their building, and some of their residents have really missed it. With modern-day technology, they realized it is still possible to have that intergenerational engagement.   The field trip started out with residents from the Commons reading stories aloud to the kindergarteners. One of the stories was a book titled, What a Treasure! by Jane Hillenbrand, which is about a mole digging for buried treasure who keeps finding treasures for everyone else, but ultimately he finds a treasure for himself, a friend. ... more >>

Upstate University Hospital’s Mammography Van at Auburn High School May 1: Upstate University Hospital’s Mammography Van will visit Auburn High School at 250 Lake Avenue in Auburn on Monday, May 9, 2023. The screenings will be available between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Appointments are recommended for women who want to get a mammogram in order to to ensure they will be seen that day. To schedule an appointment for a mammogram with the van, women should call 315-464-2588. Appointments can also be requested online at: www.upstate.edu/noexcuses To be eligible for a mammogram on the van, women should be 40 years and older; not have had a mammogram in the past 12 months; and not be experiencing breast problems. Booker T. Washington Community Center awarded $2.5 million Community Schools grant to fund programming for Auburn students: The Booker T. Washington Community Center, in partnership with the Auburn Enlarged City School District, applied for the highly competitive Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) grant program from the U.S. Education Department of Education and was recently awarded funding.   According to the U.S. Department of Education, this year’s grant competition received the largest number of applications in the history of the program. Out of 240 applications, only 42 were able to be funded. The Booker T. Washington Community Center received a 5-year grant of $2,499,770 for their Booker T.
