Auburn Music Department celebrates Music in Our Schools Month with concerts, events: The Auburn Enlarged City School District is celebrating Music in Our Schools Month with a series of concerts and events throughout March. “Throughout the month of March, the Auburn Music Department has organized several events highlighting the power of music to foster creativity, collaboration, and cultural understanding,” said Auburn Music Boosters President Allison Fennessy. “Please put these events on your calendar and join us in celebrating music in Auburn’s schools.” First up is a combined performance of the Auburn High School Band, Orchestra and Choir in a free disco concert that is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 at the AHS auditorium. Artist to speak at free public event at AHS on March 12: Auburn students will have an opportunity to hear from a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator next week when Jarrett J. Krosoczka comes to the high school and junior high school. According to his official biography, Krosoczka is best known for his “Lunch Lady” series of graphic novels, select volumes of the “Star Wars: Jedi Academy Series” and “Hey Kiddo,” which was a National Book Award Finalist. District's second Parent/Guardian University stresses literacy: The Auburn Enlarged City School District will be holding its second Parent/Guardian University with a focus on literacy. The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Auburn Public Theater at 8 Exchange St. Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to visit vendors from 5 to 5:45 p.m., including the Boy Scouts, BTW Community Center, Empower Federal Credit Union, East Hill Family Medical, the Dolly Parton Imagaination Library and Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. Auburn girls basketball sectional title game at 1 p.m. Saturday: The game time for Saturday's Section III, Class AA championship game on Saturday between Auburn and Central Square has been changed to 1 pm. District's schools celebrate Black History Month: From the high school to the elementary level, Auburn Enlarged City School District students are engaged in Black History Month activities. Owasco Elementary featured projects for second, fifth and sixth grade students. Second graders looked at different styles of Black artist Romare Bearden’s architecture to help them draw unique and interesting buildings. They used only primary colors which contrasted with night sky backgrounds. They also learned about background, middle ground, foreground when creating cityscape collages.  Fifth and sixth graders learned about Black artist Charles R. Auburn already uses method to teach reading proposed by governor: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist What you are doing now – reading these words – is something we do without even thinking. But can you remember how you learned to read? It’s a simple question with a complex answer: How do you teach a child to read?  Recently, Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed that all school districts in New York change the way they teach reading to improve student performance. Auburn music teachers to show off talents at free recital: The Auburn Music Boosters will hold a recital featuring the exceptionally talented music teachers of the Auburn Enlarged City School District from both elementary and secondary levels. District, city to hold free Broomball program at Casey Park: The Auburn Enlarged City School District and the City of Auburn is offering a free Broomball program that teaches the basics of the sport and the opportunity to play games. It will be held at the Casey Park ice rink on Sundays starting Jan 28, Feb 4, 11, 25 and March 3 from 1 to 2:30 pm. You must bring your own helmet that has a back and a chin strap, bike helmets are not allowed. You can play in your boots and do not need ice skates. Superintendent Pirozzolo announces retirement: Jeffrey A. Pirozzolo Auburn Enlarged City School District Superintendent Jeffrey Pirozzolo announced to the district’s Board of Education on Tuesday, Jan. 9 that he will be retiring Jan. 5, 2025.  The advance notice allows the board to be able to conduct a full and thorough search for the district’s next superintendent. Pirozzolo has served as Auburn’s superintendent since July 2015, and upon his retirement will have spent over 19 years in the district. Auburn High School Musical Club to host Broadway Karaoke Night fundraiser: Auburn High School’s Musical Club is gearing up for a show-stopping event when they hold a Broadway Karaoke Night Fundraiser to support their upcoming production of "Rock of Ages: High School Edition."  This lively and entertaining evening is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn. Auburn school district to host Parent/Guardian University Jan. 13: The Auburn Enlarged City School District invites parents and guardians to attend its first Parent/Guardian University. Renowned trumpet player to conduct clinics, perform at AHS: The Auburn Music Boosters are thrilled to announce that after last year’s successful Electrify Your Symphony program, we have secured the renowned trumpet player, Al Chez, to conduct exclusive music clinics for our students and perform a live concert with his band, The Brothers of Funk Big Band. Al Chez, known for his incredible talent and extensive experience, has been the trumpeter for the CBS Orchestra on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and has collaborated with musical icons such as Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton. As a Yamaha teaching artist he has conducted hundreds of clinics at schools around the country where his easy-going attitude and out-of-this-world trumpet playing is both inspiring and motivational to the students. Owasco principal spreads Christmas joy as Conductor: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist Much is made about spreading joy during the holiday season, and Owasco Elementary School Principal Ron Gorney has a special way of doing it. Gorney dresses up as the train conductor from the film “The Polar Express.” Tom Hanks plays the conductor in the film about a boy who rides a train to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. As the conductor, Gorney visits elementary schools in the Auburn School District where he brings the character to life.   “Let me just tell you this,” he said, “I'm in a position to spread joy. District, BTW to hold annual Feed-A-Belly food giveaway: The Auburn Enlarged City School District and Booker T. Washington Community Center will host its annual Fill-A-Belly food giveaway on Tuesday, December 19th at 9 a.m.    The drive-thru event will be held at BTW at 23 Chapman Ave. Auburn, and will be first come, first serve for the first 180 families. Traffic patterns will differ from last year. District offers unique and rewarding opportunities for nurses: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist Registered nurses have numerous choices where they can work, whether it’s a hospital, a doctor’s office, or another type of medical facility, but some RNs may not be aware the Auburn Enlarged City School District can also be an option.  The district is trying to fill some open nursing positions and offers some unique advantages such as scheduling and the ability to work in an educational setting. District Parent Council meetings give community more ways to give input: Community members may not be aware the Auburn Enlarged City School District holds monthly meetings that are open to the public and a forum to learn more about its operations.  The District Parent Council consists of district officials, including Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo, Deputy Superintendent Sarah Cupelli and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Amy Mahunik. Other administration employees participate depending on the focus of the meeting. The council has officers, including a president, a facilitator and a meeting minutes recorder. Members of boys cross country compete at prestigious NikeNationals: Members of the Auburn High School boys cross country team running as the Auburn Pulsars competed Saturday, Dec. 2 at the prestigious Nike CrossNationals at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Oregon. Auburn ran against 22 seven-person clubs and an additional 50 individuals from eight regions across the country. All of their travel expenses were paid by Nike. Auburn finished the regular season third at the state Class A meet and running as the Pulsars, qualified for the NikeNationals with a high finish at the New York race. Secretaries help keep schools running smoothly: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist How many jobs include responsibilities as varied as administrator, public relations, taking lunch orders, traffic cop, mail sorter, telephone operator, gatekeeper and child care? The Auburn Enlarged City School District’s school secretaries, from elementary to the junior high and high school levels handle all of those duties and more every day. Auburn sports and music boosters seek new members: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist The Auburn Enlarged City School District is fortunate to have booster clubs that support its music and athletics programs. The Auburn Music Boosters and the Auburn Sports Boosters are invaluable for the financial assistance they provide that goes toward items and services the district cannot fund through its own athletic and music budgets. These funds come through hours of hard work which means volunteers are vital. Both booster clubs would like to see more people get involved.  “We can always use more.
