Message from Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES superintendents about fentanyl:
Dear Cayuga-Onondaga Regional Community,
We, the superintendents of the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES component school districts, are writing to share an important reminder: dangerous substances such as fentanyl and other illicit drugs are present in communities across the country, including our own. While this is not new, it remains a serious and ongoing concern that calls for heightened awareness, open communication, and unwavering support for the safety and well-being of our students.
Our shared purpose is to keep our communities informed, proactive, and united in keeping children safe. We urge families to have open conversations at home about the dangers of substance use and the critical importance of making safe, healthy choices. These conversations can be difficult, but they ...

Proposed 2025-26 Budget Highlights:
The Board of Education and district administrators have carefully developed a proposed budget that upholds our commitment to high-quality instruction and programs tailored to the diverse needs of our students, while remaining sensitive to the financial pressures our community faces. With inflation at 3.8% across New York State, the District, like many others, is experiencing rising operational costs. Contractual obligations for salaries and services and daily operational expenses continue to increase.
Despite these challenges, our priority remains clear: to meet the needs of all students while maintaining fiscal responsibility. New York State is proposing only a 1% net increase in state aid, which results in a budget shortfall for our district. To close this gap responsibly, we ...

Michelle Kolceski, the district’s director of Early Learning and ENL, nominated Keysor for the award.

Auburn Schools: No-Tax-Impact Emergency Capital Project on May 20 Ballot:
On May 20, 2025, Auburn Enlarged City School District residents will vote on a proposed $7,200,000.00 building project referendum. If approved, the project would address critical maintenance issues affecting the teaching and learning environment for both students and staff.

One District, One Book highlight of National Reading Month:
March is National Reading Month and the Auburn Enlarged City School District is involved in multiple ways to spur the joy of reading in our students.
One of the key highlights is the One District, One Book initiative, which includes all five elementary schools. Running from March 17 to April 9, the program features two books: Kindergarten through third-grade students are reading Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro, while fourth through sixth graders are reading Wishtree by Katherine Applegate.
According to Amy Mahunik, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, the books were chosen in part from feedback from teachers and because they offer positive messages and tie into science and inclusion.

Genesee staff member attended MLK's 'I Have a Dream' speech:
Leslie Walker
Rare is the moment one can say they witnessed history, but Leslie Walker can. Walker had a close-up view of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech.
Walker, who works at Genesee Elementary School as a cafeteria monitor and previously as a teacher’s aide, stood in about the eighth row in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963. About 250,000 people came to the capital for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a seminal moment in the Civil Rights movement.
Walker’s father, who grew up in the South, was a deacon at (Auburn) Roosevelt Memorial Baptist Church. He was unable to attend but wanted Leslie, who was then 12, and her 11-year-old sister to go for him on a bus chartered by local ...

Sova first Auburn student to perform at All-State in 10 years:
Kaela Sova
For the first time in a decade, an Auburn High School orchestra student performed in the New York State School Music Association All-State Ensemble.
Kaela Sova, a junior, played viola as a member of the All-State String Orchestra at the All-State NYSSMA Conference in Rochester on Dec. 7.
“I'm so proud (of her),” said Auburn High School Orchestra teacher, Victoria Kinney. “Sometimes we have wonderful musicians who don't get in because they have really high competition (in the zone that Auburn is in). To know that she actually made that, you have to perform at the highest level. You have to have a perfect score in the highest level of competition which does not guarantee that you're going to go. Our zone is so competitive and knowing ...
