Statement from Superintendent Pirozzolo: Mask Mandates

Dear Auburn Families,

You may have heard that a state judge in Nassau County has ruled that New York State’s mask mandate is unconstitutional, but more litigation is expected. According to the State Education Department (SED), nothing is changing for schools at this time.

SED issued a statement saying that it is their understanding that the State of New York shall seek an appeal of the decision and seek a stay regarding the enforcement of mask wearing in schools. Therefore, schools are required to continue to require the use of masks pending the final adjudication of the litigation.

Per SED and the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s school attorneys, we will continue to require all students, staff, and visitors to wear masks at this time for the health and safety of our community and in accordance with the recommendation of the New York State Department and County Departments of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The district will continue to work with legal counsel to ascertain the implications of this litigation and any appeals for our school district.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Pirozzolo
