District's second Parent/Guardian University stresses literacy

The Auburn Enlarged City School District will be holding its second Parent/Guardian University with a focus on literacy.

The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Auburn Public Theater at 8 Exchange St.

Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to visit vendors from 5 to 5:45 p.m., including the Boy Scouts, BTW Community Center, Empower Federal Credit Union, East Hill Family Medical, the Dolly Parton Imagaination Library and Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.

The documentary “The Right to Read” will be shown from 6 to 7 p.m. The film, which was executive produced by “Reading Rainbow’s” LeVar Burton, “shares the stories of an activist, a teacher and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of lifelong success: the ability to read.”

A keynote panel discussion on the film will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. The panel will include Auburn Enlarged City School District staff, community members, and members from The Reading League.

“This Parent/Guardian University has the power to advance understanding and bring unprecedented awareness to the Auburn community,” said Dr. Reneé Burgess, the event organizer and the district’s executive director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Instruction. “The Right to Read focuses on one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time: the ability to read. After the documentary, a panel will discuss how teaching our students how to read and our tiered English Language Arts instruction has been at the forefront of our work and will continue to be.”
