District Parent Council meetings give community more ways to give input

Community members may not be aware the Auburn Enlarged City School District holds monthly meetings that are open to the public and a forum to learn more about its operations. 

The District Parent Council consists of district officials, including Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo, Deputy Superintendent Sarah Cupelli and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Amy Mahunik. Other administration employees participate depending on the focus of the meeting.

The council has officers, including a president, a facilitator and a meeting minutes recorder. Other attendees include school board members, teachers and stakeholders in the district – parents are especially encouraged to attend.

Pirozzolo said the more people that attend the meetings, the more topics they can discuss, facilitating better communication between the district and the community. Attendees can question district officials during the meetings as well.

Each meeting focuses on a particular issue, such as school safety, capital improvement projects, and other aspects in the district. For example, project managers and district Facilities Director Eric Francisco spoke about the status of capital projects at the elementary schools and high school during December’s meeting. In November, the Auburn Police Department’s and School Resource Officer Stephen Bennett and Captain Matthew Androsko discussed the current status of the district’s SRO program and also answered questions.

Future topics include parent engagement, technology, and cyber bullying. 

The meetings are held on the first Monday of the month (except when that falls on a holiday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tubman Administration Building boardroom on Thornton Avenue, and all parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to attend.
