Senior signs line Lake Ave to recognize Auburn High School's Class of 2020: (May 19, 2020) – On May 15, staff and administrators gathered at Auburn High School to install nearly 300 signs along Lake Ave to recognize and honor the class of 2020. Each sign has the name and photo of a graduating senior. The signs span the entire length of the Auburn High School property on Lake Ave from Sand Beach Rd to Fleming St. The purpose of the signs is to acknowledge that the seniors have had their capstone high school year cancelled and have overcome the unprecedented challenges of virtual learning and school closure with both class and dignity. Auburn School Board fully complied with Open Meetings Law: (May 14, 2020) – On Tuesday, May 12, 2020, the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s Board of Education conducted a budget workshop prior to its regularly scheduled board meeting. The budget workshop was held in executive session, not open to the general public, because board members needed to discuss confidential personnel-related information regarding specific employees. New York’s open meetings law states that executive sessions are allowed for discussion on “the medical, financial, credit or employment history of a particular person or corporation, or matters leading to the appointment, employment, promotion, demotion, discipline, suspension, dismissal or removal of a particular person or corporation.” “We talked about the employment ... more >>
Light the Night event to honor Auburn High School's Class of 2020: (May 8, 2020) – The Auburn Enlarged City School District is hosting a Light the Night event at Holland Stadium on Friday, May 15, 2020 beginning at 8:20 p.m. to honor the Class of 2020. All are welcome to attend the drive through event, but visitors are asked to remain in their vehicles. Attendees may enter the premises one of two ways – through the Prospect Street entrance of Cayuga Community College or through the teacher’s parking lot of Auburn Junior High School on Franklin Street. Guests are asked to follow the directional markers through the parking lot. This event has been conducted in areas across the nation, and on May 15, many schools in Section III will be participating. School Board Election and Budget Vote Information: (May 5, 2020) – On May 1, 2020, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order No. 202.26 revising timelines of school board elections and budget votes. School board elections and budget votes originally scheduled for May 19, 2020 will now take place on June 16, 2020, extended from June 9. All qualified voters will vote only by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots will be mailed out with a postage paid return envelope. Anyone interested in running in the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s school board election must self-nominate themselves by Monday, May 11, 2020 by emailing board clerk, Shelly Major, at MichelleMajor@aecsd.education . Auburn Junior High School Presents Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical: March 2020 The Auburn Junior High School will proudly present their production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical on March 13, 14 and 15. Three performances will take place at the Auburn Junior High Emerson Auditorium, 191 Franklin Street, Auburn, NY. Emma Sroka Wins Spelling Bee for the Second Time: Congratulations to Seward Elementary School 6th grader, Emma Sroka, for winning the WCNY Central NY Spelling Bee and moving on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. which will be held May 24 to 29! Her winning word was “depilatory.” This is her second consecutive win at the regional level. Last year her winning word was “deceitful.” Participants from the Auburn School District in the February 29 Regional competition were (L-R): Landon Lenhart, Gr 6; Carter DeRosa, Gr. 8; John Cuddy, Gr 4; Emma Sroka, Gr 6; and Makayla Hutchinson, Gr 5. Free Lunches available Winter Break week: Free lunches for Auburn students and their families will be available from 12:00PM to 1:00PM starting Tuesday, February 18 through Friday, February 21 at the Genesee Elementary School cafeteria, 244 Genesee Street. UPK 2020-21 Open Enrollment Now Open: Open Enrollment for Auburn Enlarged City School District’s  2020-21 Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program   The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program is an integral component of our district and includes a UPK program for our 4-year-old learners and a 3PK program for 3-year-olds! Together, these programs offer comprehensive educational services to Auburn School District residents who will be 3 or 4 years of age on or before December 1, 2020, and are available at  no cost  for eligible children.   A list of our Universal Pre-Kindergarten program locations (sites) is below with information regarding which sites offer 3PK and/or UPK and which sites provide full-day and/or half-day programs. Family Fun Day is February 1st: (January 21, 2020) - The Auburn Enlarged City School District is holding its annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, February 1, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at William H. Seward Elementary School. This event is free to all Auburn students in Pre-K through second grade and their families. Family Fun Day is a high energy event that features games to boost math and literacy skills. Auburn Board of Education no longer considering utility tax: After a considerable amount of feedback from the community, the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education has decided it will no longer consider the possibility of implementing a utility tax and has cancelled a public hearing and vote on the matter that was scheduled for January 28.   “The district would like to thank the community for all of the feedback,” said Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo. “After many phone calls, emails, and face to face discussions, we have received enough feedback to determine that this is not what the community wants. Anonymous Alerts: The Auburn Enlarged City School District partners with Anonymous Alerts®, an anti-bullying and safety reporting app and system, to enhance student safety. This communication tool serves as a way for students to anonymously, quickly and easily report sensitive concerns to school officials. The goal of Anonymous Alerts is to help maintain a safe school climate while giving students ample opportunity to securely communicate with school administrators without fear of retribution by their peers. All submitted reports remain completely anonymous unless the user chooses to reveal their identity. Workshop Kicks Off Harriet Tubman Center Partnership: The Auburn Enlarged City School District and the Harriet Tubman Center for Justice and Peace (HTCJP) are beginning a long-term working partnership aimed at integrating discussions of human dignity and childhood into efforts to address the challenges of diversity issues of all types throughout the school system.   To kick off this process, members of the AECSD administrative leadership team participated Monday, November 18 in a workshop led by Dr. Lucien Lombardo, Old Dominion University professor emeritus, HTCJP board member and 1963 Auburn High School graduate.   During the workshop, Lombardo introduced the concept of human dignity and its links to childhood, and leadership team members reflected on their own experiences with human dignity as children.   In diverse ... more >>
Three AECSD Educators Present at Conference in Croatia: Three Auburn educators recently attended and presented at the annual International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) conference, held this year in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Genesee Elementary School librarian and innovation lab coordinator Anne Mlod, Auburn High School library media specialist Victoria Calarco, and Auburn High School science teacher Christina Calarco were among over 500 conference attendees representing over 40 countries. The three presented on how to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into makerspaces, innovation labs, libraries and classroom instruction. Cayuga Area College Night - October 24: The Auburn High School Counseling Department and the Cayuga Counselors’ Association will again co-sponsor the Cayuga Area College Night . This year’s event will be held on Thursday, October 24 th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  with a Financial Aid Presentation starting at 5:30 p.m.  at Auburn High School.
