Program Descriptions
Integrated Co-Teaching:This is widely used in the district as an option to provide instruction to all students in the general education setting. Students placed in these classes have both a general education teacher and a special education teacher present to provide instruction for specific subjects. These teachers plan together, and they share responsibility for all students in the class. This approach ensures that all students are given access to the general education curriculum. This option is only available for some subjects, based on the school where instruction is being provided. (Up to date details can be found on the district plan posted on the website).
Special Class:Several class sizes exist, and each is used for different purposes within the Auburn Enlarged City School District. All special classes are composed of students with similar academic achievement and learning characteristics, social and physical development, and similar management needs.
15:1 (maximum of 15 students with 1 teacher). This grouping typically provide primary instruction to student whose learning needs require the support of a special education teacher. The student receives primary instruction in the specified content area from a Special Education teacher rather then in general education.
8:1:1 (maximum of 8 students with 1 teacher and 1 aide). This grouping provides behavioral support to students whose behavior interferes with their ability to be successful academically. Students receive their academic instruction in the special education setting for specific subjects, and counseling it typically provided. A study of the studentís behavior (functional behavioral assessment), development of behavior improvement plans, and monitoring of those plans are also typical components for these studentsí programs.
12:1:1 (maximum 12 students with 1 teacher and 1 aide). The students placed in this grouping are working towards mastery of individual IEP goals, rather than a purely academic curriculum. Reading, math and writing instruction is provided, but at a more functional level. Attention is also given to developing self-help skills, and vocational and community experiences are provided as appropriate.
Placement Policy:Per district policy, all students must attend school within their home school district. Given that not all special education programs exist in every building, it may be necessary for students who need specific supports to attend out of their home district. All district buildings house related services, consultant teacher services, resource room, integrated co-teaching and 15:1:1 special class. The following buildings house other special class programs:
Seward Elementary: 12:1:1 (three classes; grades K-1, 2-3, 4,5,6)
Herman Elementary 8:1:1*
*Behavioral support to many students at Herman is provide through the Behavior Support Program, which allows them to be in any of the programs listed above, but receive the supports outlined for the 8:1:1 setting.
